Auckland, New Zealand

Auckland is a legendary Volvo Ocean Race stopover. New Zealand’s most populous city – also known as the City of Sails – first featured in the second race in 1977-78. It’s only been missing from two editions since then – and it’s a very cosmopolitan place, with a population of about one and a half million people.

Auckland is built on a volcanic field that is still active. – and will be for the next million years, according to estimates. Surface features include cones, lakes, lagoons, islands and depressions, and several have produced extensive lava flows.

Auckland is surrounded by water, so you can do anything from harbour cruises to surfing, kayaking and whale watching. If you’re looking for a rush, then you can jump off the tallest free-standing structure in the Southern Hemisphere.

Then there’s the wine, the cafés and the restaurants – New Zealand has a buzzing food culture. And don’t forget the great coffee!

Spend a day discovering New Zealand's largest city. Explore Auckland’s highlights, including the Harbour Bridge, Queen Street, and Auckland Museum, followed by an afternoon cruise on Waitemata Harbour and admission to the Sky Tower for panoramic views.
